What is the Walgreens Balance Rewards Program?
The Walgreens Balance Rewards program is free to join and lets you earn points on purchases made in-store, online or via the Walgreens app. You can then redeem those points for monetary discounts on future purchases.
Balance Rewards members also receive special discounts like paperless coupons and exclusive offers.
How Does the Walgreens Balance Rewards Program Work?
With Walgreens Balance Rewards, you earn 10 everyday points for each dollar you spend. Additionally, the store offers bonus points on specific products each week.
Here’s how the savings add up:
- 1,000 points = $1 reward
- 2,000 points = $2 reward
- 3,000 points = $3 reward
- 4,000 points = $4 reward
- 5,000 points = $5 reward
The store also announced a Walgreens Balance Rewards change that introduced three new redemption levels effective May 5th, 2019:
- 10,000 points = $10 reward
- 20,000 points = $20 reward
- 50,000 points = $50 reward
According to Walgreens, “the maximum amount of redemption dollars that can be redeemed in a single transaction is 50,000 points, with a 100,000 point limit per day.”
Keep in mind that your Walgreens Balance Rewards points expire one year after they’re earned or if your account has been inactive for six months.
How to Maximize Your Walgreens Balance Rewards
The Walgreens Balance Rewards program can yield some pretty impressive savings — especially when you shop the store’s Weekly Ad and incorporate coupons into the mix.
Take this on select tubes of Colgate toothpaste. Balance Rewards members received 4,000 points when they bought two tubes. Stack this promotion with a $2-off-one Colgate manufacturer coupon (they show up fairly frequently), and you’re actually making money on your purchase.
The regular price for Colgate Optic White Advanced Whitening Toothpaste in Sparkling Mint is $4.99. The price during the sale was $3.99. Take $2 off each tube with the manufacturer coupon, add in the $4 in Balance Rewards and you’ve made two cents for buying toothpaste.

Is Using Walgreens Balance Rewards Worth It?
The Walgreens Balance Rewards program is a great way to save money on everyday essentials, especially if you plan your shopping trips around current coupons and weekly offers.
It’s free to join, so you should definitely check it out if you regularly go to Walgreens.
The program is particularly ideal for AARP members, as they’ll earn exclusive perks like 50 points per dollar spent on Walgreens health and wellness products, 1000 points per vaccination and 30 points per dollar on beauty purchases.
Speaking of beauty products, Walgreens also offers a Beauty Enthusiast program that lets you earn 5,000 points per $50 spent on beauty items.
The Balance Rewards program is also beneficial if you use the Walgreens pharmacy. Members earn 100 points on every filled prescription that they pick up in-store. Plus, health-conscious members can earn bonus points for linking health devices, logging exercise activities and even tracking their sleep.
