With the recent announcement that Disney+ will be introducing a cheaper, ad-supported tier of the service by the end of 2022, rumors have sprung up that Netflix could also introduce ads in the not-so-distant future. These rumors were only fueled by Netflix CFO Spencer Neumann, who recently spoke out about the potential for an ad-supported Netflix subscription.

According to Neumann, Netflix does not currently have plans to follow in the footsteps of Disney+ and release an ad-supported streaming tier. However, he did say something that is a pretty big break from the company’s usual stance on advertisements on its service. He clarified that while the company doesn’t have any plans to introduce any ads at the moment, he also didn’t rule out the possibility that something like this could be coming down the pipeline. In the past, Netflix has taken a fairly strong stance against including ads on the service, so the fact that they are even open to considering something like this is a major change of course for the company.

Adding Ads to Netflix Could Be a Huge Win for Subscribers

If Netflix did introduce ads to its service, it could be a big win for subscribers. Netflix has hiked prices significantly over the last few years, with Basic plans starting at $9.99 a month. If you want to stream content in HD, you’ll have to shell out for the $15.49 a month Standard plan. But any Netflix plan that includes ads will likely be cheaper than the ad-free versions, so you could see prices dip below $9.99 a month. It’s even possible that a limited, ad-supported Netflix tier could be free, just like the basic plan for Peacock.

Whatever the price, it would likely be a win for those looking to save some money and who don’t mind watching the occasional ad. However, a new plan like this could mean that prices for ad-free streaming might go up. Lots of viewers have become accustomed to ad-free binge-watching in the age of digital streaming, and it’s unclear how many people would switch to the ad-supported version.
Netflix will likely keep an eye on how the new Disney+ plan is received before making a decision one way or the other. It looks like Netflix is staying the course and keeping ads away from the service for the time being.
