Reading Time: 5 minutesAs a gaming lifestyle brand, Razer has long-provided mainstream access to enthusiast- and pro-level performance features with each expansion of its product offerings. And its latest endeavor aims to pull back the curtains of the niche and tightly guarded hobby of keyboard customization.
One of the main attractions of PC culture is the ability to customize nearly every detail of your hardware and accessories. But this freedom also comes with a steep learning curve and decision paralysis — there are no limits to what you can make bespoke!
When I first joined the world of “keebs” — a nickname for a group of keyboard enthusiasts at Slickdeals — I met people who were doing some incredible things, like building custom keyboards from scratch, hand-making coiled/braided cables, designing custom keycaps, etc. Those are definitely the diehard “keebs” who keep the hobby on its toes.
But for the rest of us who fall more into the category of “casual enthusiast,” Razer has launched a collection of all-new accessories that offer a premium and personalized experience with the ease of access that the brand is known for.
Let’s take a closer look at the just-released product line-up which includes Phantom Keycaps, PBT Keycap + Coiled Cable Upgrade Sets, and ergonomic wrist wrests.
Unleash your RGB with Phantom Keycaps
For those who love a light show, Razer’s Phantom Keycaps feature translucent walls so that more RGB lighting shines through, delivering a stronger and more direct glow. Yes, these are basically “pudding keycaps,” but Razer puts its own spin on it with stealth, bottom-layered legends that disappear when the lighting is off — fitting for the Phantom name.
Remember the Evangelion-themed keyboard I built recently? I gave the black and white keys a Phantom upgrade (sadly, green isn’t available in Phantom spec), and the lighting effects are much bolder, plus the no-letters look when the keyboard is off is so sleek!
The Phantom Keycaps set comes with 128 keycaps, and fits most cross-shaped axis switches. The kit supports both US and UK layouts, and is guaranteed to be compatible with Razer’s 60%, 65%, tenkeyless, and full-sized keyboards. The upgrade set is currently available in either black or white.
And if you just want to be one-and-done, the Razer BlackWidow V3 Mini HyperSpeed Phantom Edition comes pre-fitted with these pudding caps.
Pro-tip: if you’re going to build the Phantom look, it’s best to start with a Phantom Edition keyboard as the foundation. This ensures that the switches (underneath the keycaps) are also translucent so you’ll get the brightest glow.
The Razer BlackWidow V3 Mini Hyperspeed Phantom Edition is currently a Razer.com exclusive.

Let’s Get Matchy-Matchy!
After you’ve spent all this effort to customize your keycaps, having a plain ol’ black cable is so blah. Thankfully, Razer is now offering a cable upgrade set that comes in Quartz Pink, Mercury White, Razer Green, and Classic Black.
This kit features doubleshot PBT keycaps with ultra-thin fonts and a textured finish, and is complemented by a color-matched coiled cable which lays flat on the desk for a clutter-less look. The cable features aluminum braiding with TPU insulation, and can extend up to two meters.
If you don’t want the coiled cable, you can still get the PBT keycaps set by itself, which includes 120 keycaps and is guaranteed to fit Razer’s 60%, tenkeyless and full-sized keyboards.

Don’t Forgo the Ergo
With your fingertip experience upgraded, it’s now time to make sure your wrists are resting on luxury as well. Razer’s Ergonomic Wrist Rest has added two new sizes to accommodate mini and tenkeyless keyboards.
There’s nothing wildly different here — except for a new bezel-less design — as some of Razer’s flagship keyboards already come with wrist rests. These padded supports feature an ergonomic angle, memory foam cushion, and a leatherette exterior that’s luxurious to the touch. They’re also water resistant, which is great news for me because my palms tend to get sweaty during intense gaming sessions. Lastly, anti-slip rubber feet ensure that the only movement is from the clicky keys.

Your Hobby, Your Choices
While there aren’t necessarily any performance gains to be had with these new Razer accessories, it’s still meaningful for those who want to ease into the hobby of keyboard modding without a steep learning curve.
You’ll find all-in-one customization solutions at an accessible price point — and who knows, maybe you’ll graduate into building keyboards from scratch like the one below from my friend @meloncollie.
