Even though the iPhone is one of the most versatile devices out there, we know that you still want more juice from it. The iPhone’s battery has actually come a long way, considering that its first iteration packed only a 1150mAh battery — which could last only one hour of use in a single charge.

Nowadays, your iPhone’s battery can handle hours of music and movie streaming, internet browsing, and video calls on a single charge. But everyone is still asking this question: how long does an iPhone battery last?

How Long Do iPhone Batteries Usually Last?

There’s no doubt that Apple has been excellent in introducing new specific features that make the iPhone more versatile. But each new powerful feature could deplete your iPhone’s power resource, which then requires the need to have a stronger and more long-lasting battery.

According to Apple’s iPhone specs, here are the estimated hours that each fully-charged iPhone battery would last when subjected to continuous video playback:

How Many Charge Cycles Does the iPhone Battery Have?

Apple says that a normal iPhone battery that has already used 500 charge cycles should still be able to retain up to 80% of its original capacity. But of course, it does not mean that your iPhone will not work anymore after you used up those 500 charge cycles. It just means that your iPhone’s battery performance will not be as good as it was back when it was new.

You’d also want to know that there is a way for you to check your iPhone battery’s current capacity — that is if your iPhone operates on iOS 11.3 and later.

You can find the status of your iPhone’s battery health in Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

How Many Years Should an iPhone Last?

An iPhone is typically a durable and long-lasting device, and you can expect to get three to five years of service from it. Of course, you can still squeeze out a couple more years to add to your iPhone’s expected life span if you’re deliberate in taking good care of it.  You can keep your software up to date for the best performance, but eventually, your phone may become obsolete when the hardware deteriorates and it can no longer handle any more software updates.

What Are Signs That My iPhone Battery is Bad?

Your iPhone’s battery will go through performance issues along the way, and you should replace your battery when you encounter these problems. You should never attempt a DIY battery replacement with an iPhone, as it will void your warranty and you could cause more issues if you don’t know what you’re doing.

What you have to do is to take it to the nearest Apple Service Center, and let them properly dispose of the old battery and put in a new battery in.

Having said that, here are some signs that your iPhone battery may need to be replaced.

1. Your Battery is Outgrowing Your iPhone

When your battery is starting to swell or outgrow your iPhone, it’s already time to get a new battery pack. You should go to an Apple Service Center right away so that they could properly dispose the battery and provide you with a new one. If you are not under warranty, you may need to pay an additional charge.

2. Your iPhone Gets Hot Quickly

If you sense that your iPhone is getting hot more quickly than it used to, then there’s a huge chance that the battery already has issues. You might want to have your battery replaced when you feel that there’s no explanation as to why your iPhone is getting too hot to touch.

3. You Have to Charge Your iPhone in Between Short Intervals

If you are using your iPhone for a year or two, you’ll notice a point when your battery starts to drain faster than usual. One sign that your iPhone’s battery is dying is when you have to charge it more, which means that the battery pack is now operating at a low capacity.

4. Your iPhone Suddenly Shuts Down

It’s frustrating when your iPhone unexpectedly shuts down, especially when you’re in the process of typing a long message or watching a good movie. When your iPhone suddenly shuts down or restarts, there is likely a problem with the battery health and life.
