Earlier this year, Facebook announced a partnership with Atom and Fandango to provide US mobile users with discounts on tickets purchased through the app. The social media behemoth is offering up to $2 off tickets (the total is equivalent to any convenience fees charged by the movie-ticketing services) for a “limited time only.”
Oddly, the promotion started in March of 2018 and hasn’t shown any sign of letting up. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume the company’s intention is to try and get customers entrenched in buying tickets through Facebook before ultimately bringing back convenience fees. In fact, this strategy may be progressing already.
In July of 2018, massive movie theater chain AMC announced a joint venture with Facebook that allows US mobile users to purchase movie tickets through the social media hub. The convenience fees for AMC have also been waived for an unspecified “introductory period.” It’s likely, then, that Facebook is interested in expanding its reach into more and more ticket-buying options.

There are two important things to keep in mind when purchasing movie tickets through Facebook. One, the service is currently only available on mobile devices, so you can’t buy tickets on your laptop or desktop. You have to get them through the Facebook app by going to the “Explore” tab and subsequently the “Movies” tab, or by going to facebook.com/movie_ticketing through your mobile web browser.
Two, the up to $2 discount Facebook offers on convenience fees does not stack with other discounts and promo codes. You have to pay full price for the tickets to waive the service fee.
So, if you don’t have access to a movie theater subscription service like MoviePass or AMC’s Stubs-A-List (and you don’t mind Facebook having access to your credit card information) this seems like a solid way to save a couple bucks the next time you’re headed to the movies. Just be sure to get your tickets soon. Facebook has given no indication as to when this offer will end.
