Over the past decade, environmental awareness has come increasingly to the forefront of our culture. More than ever before, people (and companies!) are conscious of their environmental impact, and occasionally deals come to the surface to help support this planetary initiative.
This week, I’m bringing exactly such a deal to the SlickDeals community–one that in many cases comes with a free smart-home device with no strings attached. The cause for such an occasion? Energy Efficiency Day!
Established in 2016, Energy Efficiency Day is a collaborative effort of dozens of energy-efficiency advocacy groups from around the United States to spread one simple message: “Save Money. Cut Pollution. Create Jobs.”
Touted as both a national economic engine and the cheapest, quickest way to meet our energy needs, energy efficiency is a worthy cause to support. To celebrate, energy companies across the nation are offering discounts and free Google devices to customers who qualify.

In alignment with this message, energy companies in select states nationwide are offering eligible customers a Google Nest Thermostat and a Google Home Mini for as little as $0 (excluding shipping and taxes) with no rebate or coupons required.
For example, APS customers in Arizona or New Jersey Natural Gas customers can receive a Google Nest Thermostat for $0, ComEd customers in Chicago can receive one for $1, and Washington residents serviced by Puget Sound Energy can receive one for just $25 (over $100 off the current retail price)!
Residents of Kansas City can snag a Nest Learning Thermostat for $50 if they are customers of Evergy, while customers of SMECO and BG&E in Maryland can receive the same for $129. Both of these offers come with a free Google Home Mini
In fact, energy companies in at least 22 states will be giving away a free Google Home Mini (many require purchasing a smart thermostat of some sort). This is not the first time we’ve seen deals on the Home Mini, but whether this would be your first or your fifth smart speaker, it doesn’t hurt to maximize your home’s musical acoustics!
Want to get your hands on one of these deals? I don’t blame you. To see all the offers available to you, you can check the full list of energy providers in each state who are participating in this Energy Efficiency Day promotion.

The Google Nest Thermostat is a smart climate-controlling device that can automatically adjust your home’s temperature to save energy when you leave the house.
Its Wi-Fi connected features also enable you to control and program it from anywhere in the world with the Google Home app, whether you’re on an errand or simply can’t be bothered to leave your bed.

On the other hand, if game stats, trivia, or productivity are on your mind, the Google Home Mini is an excellent companion to have at your side.
Not only can it provide answers to popular questions such as “can dogs eat strawberries” or “do cats have dreams” (thank you, pets, for your invaluable companionship this last year), but this smart speaker can also create shopping lists, play music, set reminders, or even update your home’s climate with a compatible smart thermostat!
