Patagonia is running its past-season sale now with up to 40% off select clothing and gear. Some of these items are genuinely worth buying. Others look like deals on paper but have been available for significantly less elsewhere, sometimes very recently. Here’s how to tell the difference.

What to Skip

Men’s Nano Puff Jacket (Sizzle Red): $113.99 at Patagonia

The Men’s Nano Puff Jacket is $113.99, down from $229 (50% off). That sounds like a strong deal, but Al’s Sporting Goods currently has the same jacket in select colors for as low as $99.99. Skip Patagonia on this one.

Men’s Better Sweater Fleece Jacket (Rough Green): $117.99 at Patagonia

The Men’s Better Sweater Full-Zip Jacket is on sale for $117.99, down from $169 (30% off). The Better Sweater quarter-zip — a comparable piece — sold at Al’s for $82.99 just five months ago. Thirty percent off on the full-zip is not a historically strong discount for this jacket. If you’re not in a rush, wait for a better one.

Women’s Nano Puff Jacket (Pink Field): $159.99 at Patagonia

The Women’s Nano Puff Jacket is $159.99, down from $229 (30% off). REI had both the men’s and women’s versions of this jacket for $113.83 in March — 50% off the same retail price. This jacket regularly goes on sale for more than Patagonia is offering right now. Hold off if you can.

Women’s Diamond Quilted Bomber Hoody (Black): $138.99 at Patagonia

This one is tough to justify. The Women’s Diamond Quilted Bomber Hoody is on sale for $138.99, down from $199 (30% off). Dick’s Sporting Goods had the same jacket for $75.73 just last week (although in a different color). That deal has expired, but it makes clear this jacket can be found for much less than what Patagonia is currently asking. Skip it and wait for the next one.

Fieldsmith Linked Backpack 24L: $68.99 at Patagonia

The Fieldsmith Linked Backpack 24L is $68.99 at Patagonia, down from $115 (40% off). REI currently has the same model, but different color, for $58.73 with free store pickup or free shipping on orders over $60. Go to REI instead.

What’s Worth Buying

Men’s Houdini Windbreaker (Blue Sage): $83 at Patagonia

The Men’s Houdini Windbreaker in Blue Sage is on sale for $83, down from $119. The Houdini is one of Patagonia’s most useful pieces — packable enough to stuff in a pocket, wind-resistant enough for trail running or hiking, and light enough that it doesn’t add real weight to a pack. It doesn’t show up at deep discounts very often, and this colorway is hard to find for less at authorized retailers right now.

Lightweight Waxed Cotton Jacket: $183.99 at Patagonia

The Lightweight Waxed Cotton Jacket is $183.99, down from $369 (50% off). Waxed cotton is a premium, weather-resistant material with a very different feel from the synthetic jackets dominating this sale — and 50% off on a Patagonia waxed jacket is genuinely unusual. If this style fits your wardrobe, it’s worth buying now.

Women’s Capilene Cool Daily Hoody: $40.99 at Patagonia

The Women’s Capilene Cool Daily Hoody is $40.99, down from $69 (40% off). This is one of Patagonia’s most popular warm-weather base layers. It’s quick-drying, stretchy with HeiQ Mint odor control, and $41 is a solid price. Good pickup if you’ve been looking for one.

Men’s Lightweight Insulated Fjord Flannel Shirt (Agate Green): $98.99 at Patagonia

The Men’s Lightweight Insulated Fjord Flannel Shirt in Agate Green is $98.99, down from $199 (50% off). This is a cotton brushed flannel with 80g synthetic fill — more of a casual insulated shirt than a technical layer — and under $100 is a strong price for a Patagonia insulated piece. Worth it if the style works for you.

The Patagonia sale runs until stock sells out, so availability will vary. If you want to be notified when Patagonia or similar outdoor gear goes on a deeper sale, set up a deal alert on Slickdeals.
