Reading Time: 2 minutesThe free-to-play MMORPG Lost Ark has officially seen a global launch, after arriving in South Korea in 2019. The title hit a few snags hours before its release on February 11th, but now that servers are back online, it’s skyrocketing up the charts.
With nearly one million concurrent players, Lost Ark easily found a spot as the most-played game on Steam. Considering heavy hitters such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2 and Apex Legends typically fall into that spot, it’s safe to say Lost Ark is off to a tremendous start. The game is entirely free, although you can pay for in-game cosmetics and purchase a monthly subscription for additional benefits.
Amazon Games is responsible for the global launch of Lost Ark. The company previously worked on New World, which also saw incredible launch numbers before experiencing a rapid decline in players. There are a few key differences between the titles, however, and reasons to be optimistic about Lost Ark. For one, Lost Ark is already several years old (having launched in South Korea nearly three years ago) and has seen considerable updates and adjustments to finetune the experience. It’s also a free game, unlike New World, which carries a $39.99 price tag.
Should You Play Lost Ark?
Although a few things were lost in translation (including some stilted voice acting), Lost Ark has a lot going for it. Anyone seeking a deep RPG to get them through the winter months could do a lot worse than the latest from Amazon Games. Not only is the game free, but it’s already pulling down impressive scores from most critics. System requirements are also rather low, meaning you’ll probably be able to run the game on an aging desktop.
MMORPGs are always the most exciting when they’re brand-new. The thrill of having a sprawling world to explore is half the fun – but learning the ropes with thousands of other players at your side is something not found in other genres. Lost Ark will likely have a much longer shelf life than New World, but we’d recommend starting the journey early to experience the birth of a new MMO.
