The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched in 2015. Now, seven years later, CD Projekt RED (CDPR) has confirmed The Witcher 4 is officially in development. It was also revealed that CDPR is entering a “strategic partnership” with Epic Games. Additionally, the team is switching over to Unreal Engine 5 from REDengine.
As one of the best-reviewed games of all time, fans have long been hoping for a sequel to The Witcher 3. Several bits of DLC have launched over the years (as well as a Netflix series). But we’ve heard little news about a potential Witcher 4. Besides the fact that it now runs on Unreal Engine 5, there’s little else confirmed about the title.
“We’re happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise,” CD Projekt Red announced on its blog. “This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.”
CDPR then went on to mention the studio isn’t completely abandoning REDengine. It’ll continue to be used in the upcoming Cyperpunk 2077 expansion. The Witcher 4 also won’t be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. CDPR revealed this in a follow-up tweet to the original announcement.
Accompanying the announcement was a teaser image that gave us our first indication as to what we can expect with the upcoming Witcher project. Prominently featured in the image is a cat medallion. It’s usually. worn by Ciri throughout The Witcher 3. She’s also become a staple of the Netflix series. So it’s not out of the question that she’ll be the star of the upcoming game.
