Mark your calendars, save your Coins and crack open that Party Ball. Super Nintendo World is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023. The first Nintendo-themed park in the United States is expected to share a similar layout and concept with the flagship Super Nintendo World park. That one is located in Universal Studios Japan, and originally opened in March 2021.
Nintendo and Universal Studios have yet to reveal many details about specific Mushroom Kingdom-themed attractions. But it’s safe to assume that the American iteration of Super Nintendo World will have a lot in common with its Japanese counterpart. Universal Studios representatives confirmed that Super Nintendo World will offer a variety of activities. There will be interactive areas that look like a real-life Super Mario game level, plus Nintendo-themed meals, merchandise and other flights of fancy.
Like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and similar franchise-based attractions at Universal parks, Super Nintendo World offers “Total Mario Immersion.” Parkgoers can punch through question mark boxes, explore green pipes and traverse the dark Bob-omb underground. We’ll let you know if we hear any news regarding equippable Fire Flowers or F.L.U.D.D. devices.
The Japanese Super Nintendo World has two main attractions. The featured ride is Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, an AR-enhanced indoor coaster that allows you to hop behind the wheel and shoot Koopa shells at your friends and beloved Nintendo characters for points. Representatives have confirmed that the Universal Studios Hollywood location will not feature the gentler Yoshi’s Adventure treasure hunt ride, but current speculation suggests that there will be a second ride. There’s even a possibility for further expansion once the park opens — Universal Studios Japan already has a massive Donkey Kong section in the works, which will expand the park’s total size by 70 percent when it opens in 2024.
The Osaka-based park opening was delayed by one year due to COVID-19, but we’re holding out hope for a timely Universal Studios Hollywood debut — construction in the park’s lower lot began way back in 2019 and it sounds like Universal is about to stir up even more anticipation with a Nintendo-themed takeover in the lower lot’s Feature Presentation gift shop.
