After plenty of speculation, Sony has officially revealed a revamped version of PlayStation Plus. The service will be split into three tiers and will be replacing both the existing version of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now. It’s set to launch this June.
PlayStation Plus Essential is the cheapest tier offered, listed for $9.99/month and providing many of the same features already available to subscribers. PlayStation Plus Extra charges $14.99/month, although you’ll gain access to a catalog of up to 400 games. Sony’s new service tops out with PlayStation Plus Premium, which is listed for $17.99/month and adds classic PS1, PS2, PSP and PS4 games to its lineup.
Here’s a closer look at the new PlayStation Plus tiers:

PlayStation Plus Essential ($9.99/month)

  • Provides the same benefits that PlayStation Plus members are getting today, such as:
    • Two monthly downloadable games
    • Exclusive discounts
    • Cloud storage for saved games
    • Online multiplayer access
  • There are no changes for existing PlayStation Plus members in this tier.

PlayStation Plus Extra ($14.99/month)

  • Provides all the benefits from the Essential tier
  • Adds a catalog of up to 400* of the most enjoyable PS4 and PS5 games – including blockbuster hits from the PlayStation Studios catalog and third-party partners. Games in the Extra tier are downloadable for play.

PlayStation Plus Premium ($17.99/month)

  • Provides all the benefits from Essential and Extra tiers
  • Adds up to 340* additional games, including:
    • PS3 games available via cloud streaming
    • A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations
  • Offers cloud streaming access for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles, and PC.
  • Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.

Sony mentioned that the following games will be available at launch for Extra and Premium subscribers:

  • Death Stranding
  • God of War
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • Returnal

The new plan will begin rolling out in phases this June, with the goal of having most regions up and running before the second half of 2022. It’s worth noting that the most expensive tier of PlayStation Plus ($17.99) is more expensive than Xbox Game Pass Ultimate ($14.99) – and it likely won’t include day-one releases like Microsoft.
“[In terms of] putting our own games into this service, or any of our services, upon their release… as you well know, this is not a road that we’ve gone down in the past,” said PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan. “And it’s not a road that we’re going to go down with this new service.”
