You were lucky enough to get your hands on a rare, valuable PlayStation 5, but what good is a next-gen console without a library of next-gen games to choose from? Talent and supply chain issues clearly stunted the production and release of new games during the first year the PS5 entered the wild. But things are looking up. There are quite a few recent releases worth checking out and a stacked roster of highly-anticipated upcoming releases coming out in the next few months.

The latest console generation had a tumultuous beginning. But it looks like 2022 is shaping up to be a momentous year for next-gen gaming. Whether you’re looking for a new game to play today or looking for new additions to your PS5 library, you can’t go wrong with these games.

Must-Have PS5 Games Available Now

Demon Souls

Price: $69.99 (Standard Edition), $89.99 (Deluxe Edition)

It was bold for Sony to promote a rebooted version of a seminal (yet polarizing) PlayStation 3 game during the PS5 launch. That said, designating Demon Souls as a front-and-center launch title proved to be a well-informed decision — the tremendous rise and continued success of From Software’s Souls series permanently shifted the landscape of AAA console gaming, what better way to usher in the new guard than with a critically acclaimed re-imagining of the cult classic that started it all?

There aren’t any deals on the Deluxe Edition at the moment, but you can pick up the Standard version of Demon Souls for $42 at Walmart.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Price: $49.99 (Standard Edition), $69.99 (Ultimate Edition)

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a cross-generation launch title that bears a strong resemblance to its PS4 predecessor (Marvel’s Spider-Man, 2018). That makes its hard-earned status as a definitive PS5 classic that much more impressive. Taking full advantage of the PS5’s signature ray-tracing technology, intelligent HDR display and zippy SSD loading times, Spider-Man: Miles Morales proves that there is always room to expand upon a tried-and-true action-adventure formula — when you see Miles’ reflection whip across a skyscraper across town as you swing across the city, you feel practically weightless yourself.

DEATHLOOP

Price: $59.99 (Standard Edition), $79.99 (Deluxe Edition)

Plenty of recent PS5 game releases could be described as “clever” or “innovative.” But few embody the ethos of “next-generation” gaming quite like DEATHLOOP. Simply put, there’s nothing else quite like it on PS5 or elsewhere. Each time Colt Vahn wakes up and begins plotting his next time loop escape, DEATHLOOP finds a new way to simultaneously celebrate and deconstruct roguelike mechanics and first-person shooter tropes.

Amazon currently has the best PS5 DEATHLOOP deal, you can buy the Standard Edition for $34.72.

Horizon Forbidden West

Release Date: February 18th, 2022
Price: $69.99 (Standard Edition), $79.99 (Digital Deluxe Edition)

With plenty of stiff competition that spans decades, trying to designate the best PlayStation-exclusive action RPG would be a fool’s errand. As far as the modern-day is concerned, it’s safe to say that Horizon Zero Dawn raised the bar by a Tallneck’s breadth when it first debuted in 2017.

While Horizon Forbidden West is reminiscent of Aloy’s original journey through the lush, brutal ruins of the post-apocalyptic American West, the original game’s winning concept is fortified by the addition of new biomes, machines and recognizable ruins (such as Lost San Francisco). Recent press and gameplay footage shows that the map is even larger and the game is chock-full of new mechanics like underwater exploration and freeform climbing.

OlliOlli World

Release Date: February 8th, 2022
Price: $29.99 (Standard Edition), $44.99 (Rad Edition)

Compared to these blockbuster PS5 titles and rebooted classics, OlliOlli World is an anomaly. After all, the original OlliOlli is an indie skateboarding side-scroller produced for Sony’s forgotten child, the PlayStation Vita. Sure, OlliOlli has retained a modest cult following since its quiet 2014 release, but games like this are considered lucky if they get ported to a more popular console — no one could have seen a complete overhaul like OlliOlli World coming.

If you’re looking for a skating game more relaxing than what the Tony Hawk series has to offer, OlliOlli World‘s dreamy, shreddable 2.5D landscape and endearing community of NPCs might be just your speed.

Gran Turismo 7

Release Date: March 4th, 2022
Price: $69.99 (Standard Edition), $89.99 (Digital Deluxe Edition)

The seventh iteration of Gran Turismo is expected to incorporate tons of fan-favorite features from older games. That includes GT Simulation Mode from Gran Turismo 4 and a whole fleet of traditional racing tracks and vehicles. This established PlayStation series isn’t setting out to reinvent the wheel, but the addition of immersive DualSense haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio and real-time ray tracing will undoubtedly elevate the classic Gran Turismo racing experience.
