How to Choose the Right GoPro HERO10 Black for You

GoPro HERO10 Black Bones and GoPro HERO10 Black

The GoPro Hero10 Black has one other ultra-lightweight model called the Hero 10 Black Bones that’s made specifically for use with drones. It is available exclusively through GoPro (only in the U.S.), with no other retail availability. Here’s a comparison of their specs:

GoPro HERO10 Black

  • Weighs 153g
  • New GP2 processor
  • 5.3K60, 4K120 + 2.7K240 video resolutions
  • Hyper-Smooth 4.0 stabilization
  • Waterproof (up to 33 feet)
  • 23MP photos
  • 19.6MP frame grabs from 5K video
  • TimeWarp 3.0 / 8x Slo-Mo / Night Lapse
  • Cloud-connected (automatically uploads footage)

GoPro HERO10 Black Bones

  • Weighs 54g
  • New GP2 processor
  • 5.3K60, 4K120 + 2.7K240 video resolutions
  • Hyper-Smooth 4.0 stabilization
  • Includes Player + ReelSteady desktop software
  • 19.6MP frame grabs from 5K video

While there are many similarities between the two models, the HERO10 Black Bones is essentially a stripped-down version that contains the core elements of the traditional model but only what’s necessary for FPV (First-Person View). Weight is the biggest difference, with the Black Bones coming in at nearly 100g less than the original model. With its ultra-lightweight and well-ventilated design, it’s easy to attach to a drone.

If you plan to capture mostly drone footage with your GoPro, the Black Bones may be the better option for you. However, if you plan to shoot a lot of content in or around water, then you’ll want the waterproof capabilities of the traditional model.

Something else to keep in mind–while both models have the same impressive video specs and are capable of capturing similar quality screen grabs from video, only the traditional model can capture 23MP stills and record 8x Slo-Mo and Night Lapse.

How to Get the Best Deals on the GoPro HERO10 Black

  • Wait for a sale: With Memorial Day behind us, the next big sales event is Amazon Prime Day, which has been confirmed for July 2022, though the exact date remains a mystery. Since the two-day sale often includes substantial discounts on electronics, you may be able to score a deal on the GoPro HERO10 Black. There are also likely to be sales happening around Independence Day, so all in all, July would be a great month to shop!
  • Take advantage of camera trade-in programs: Many retailers will buy your used camera gear. Usually, you can opt to receive either cash or store credit, which you could then apply toward the purchase of a new GoPro. Some of the stores that offer trade-in programs include Adorama, B&H Photo Video, and Best Buy.
  • Look for refurbished or open-box models: If you don’t mind buying a used camera, you can often find discounted prices on refurbished cameras. The key to avoiding a scam? Only purchase from reputable sources. Retailers like Best Buy also sell open-box items, which are items that have been returned to the store and are often 10% to 20% lower than the original price.
  • Wait for the next model to be released: True, you’ll have to wait patiently for a newer model to come on the market. But when it is released, the pricing on the previous model will drop, allowing you to snag the GoPro HERO10 Black for a lower price.
  • Set up a Deal Alert: If you’d rather automate the process of looking for discounts, set up a Deal Alert. It saves you the time and effort of scouring the internet looking for sales. You’ll get a notification whenever the GoPro HERO10 Black goes on sale, so you can simply click and save.

Frequently Asked Questions about the GoPro HERO10 Black

What’s the Difference between GoPro HERO9 and HERO10?

The new GP2 processor is what sets the HERO10 apart from the HERO9, allowing it to offer quicker captures, speedier boot-ups, and a more responsive touchscreen. Though both models offer the same video resolutions, you’ll also get faster frame rates with the HERO10. The new and improved HyperSmooth 4.0 video stabilization increases the horizon leveling to 45 degrees (from 27 degrees on the HERO9)—you can even turn it on during livestreams.

As for a lens upgrade, the HERO10 features an improved scratch-resistant, hydrophobic coating on the outer covering rather than the actual lens. One piece of good news if you’re considering an upgrade: all of the accessories from the HERO9 will work with the HERO10, since they share the same chassis.

Is the GoPro HERO10 Black Good for Photography?

While the GoPro HERO10 Black was designed with videographers in mind, its ability to shoot stills in RAW coupled with the 23-megapixel image quality makes it a great camera for photography, particularly for wide-angle scenes. And if you happen to be running video when a great photo moment pops up, you have the ability to capture 19.6-megapixel screen grabs from your 5k video footage.

The HERO10 also offers SuperPhoto, which has two modes—HDR (high dynamic range) and Auto—to take the guesswork out of camera settings. Perhaps the HERO10’s biggest limitation compared to DSLR or mirrorless cameras is a noninterchangeable lens.

Is the GoPro HERO10 Black Waterproof?

Yes, the GoPro HERO10 Black is waterproof and safe for underwater submersion up to 33 feet. However, if you’d like to use it at greater depths, such as when scuba diving, you also have the option of adding a protective housing around it. This would allow you to take the camera down to a depth of 196 feet.

How Long Does a GoPro HERO10 Black Battery Last?

The HERO10 Black’s battery endurance depends on its temperature. For example, when you’re shooting in cold weather and the battery temperature is 14 degrees Fahrenheit, you can expect an average of 56 minutes of continuous recording at 5.3K/60fps and up to 115 minutes of continuous recording at 1080p/30fps. In warmer settings, when the battery temperature is 77 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll get an extra four to five minutes of recording time.
