Reading Time: 4 minutes- Metroid Dread Release Date: October 8th, 2021
- Editions Available: Standard, Special Edition
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch
- MSRP: Standard – $59.99 | Next Level – $89.99
It’s been a long time coming. First announced in a 2005 edition of Game Informer, Metroid Dread is finally available for pre-order. This highly-anticipated Nintendo title is a return to form for the Metroid series, as Metroid Dread will be the first 2D side-scrolling game to join the lineup since Metroid Fusion debuted in 2002 — and it’s even a direct sequel to its 19-year-old predecessor.
As the winds of fate continue to push the video game industry further and further in the direction of hyper-realistic 3D graphics, we can’t take any major 2D releases for granted. In classic Metroid fashion, Dread follows intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran through her grim encounters on the planet ZDR, which has been completely overrun by hostile aliens and menacing machines. Using weapons like the new Storm Missile as well as Samus’ signature jumping and sliding maneuvers, you must destroy enemies and get to the bottom of the evil forces holding ZDR hostage.
The Best Pre-Order Deals for Metroid Dread
You shouldn’t have any problems finding Standard Edition copies available for pre-order, but the Special Edition sold out quickly when it first became available. Some retailer sites (such as Best Buy) show a greyed-out “Coming Soon” button instead of “Currently Unavailable” or “Sold Out,” so you might get a second chance at a Special Edition version if you weren’t able to snag one the first time around.
While we’ve only seen one pre-order discount and no in-game pre-order bonuses, you can score exclusive Metroid merch when you take advantage of these retailer-specific preorder deals. Supplies are limited — be sure to act quickly if you see something you like!

- Standard Edition – Sale Price: $47.70 | Regular Price: $59.99

While this is the best price we’ve seen for the game, it’s also worth noting that it “ships October 8th” but may not arrive on launch day from this vendor.

Which Version of Metroid Dread Should I Pre-Order?
Standard Edition – $59.99
If you don’t feel like paying an extra $30 or hunting down a rare copy of the sold-out Special Edition, you can pre-order the Standard version of Metroid Dread wherever Switch games are sold. The core game is exactly the same between the two versions, so no need to worry about missing out on any exclusive features.
Special Edition – $89.99
After surviving a long drought devoid of new Metroid content, frenzied fans quickly depleted the preliminary stock of Metroid Dread Special Edition. It is currently unavailable for purchase (outside of the resale market), but there’s a chance that more Special Edition copies will become available closer to October 8th.
On top of the game card and any requisite pre-order bonuses, Metroid Dread Special Edition comes with:
- Illustrated steel game case
- Five high-quality art cards featuring key art from every 2D Metroid game
- 190-page art book detailing the history of all five 2D Metroid titles
Boost Your Health and Ammo with the Metroid Dread Amiibo Two-Pack
- Metroid Dread Amiibo Two-Pack — $29.99
Remember, Metroid fans have been waiting for a very, very long time. Just like the highly sought-after Special Edition of Metroid Dread, this Amiibo set featuring Samus and E.M.M.I. sold out almost immediately after they became available. We don’t know when (or if) the Metroid Dread Amiibo Two-Pack will come back into stock, but these perks might entice you into hunting down your own pair of Metroid figures on the resale market:
- Scanning the Samus Amiibo adds an extra energy tank, increasing your health by 100
- Scanning the E.M.M.I. Amiibo grants Samus an extra Missile Plus Tank, increasing her missile capacity by 10
- Tapping the Samus Amiibo once per day boosts health
- Tapping the E.M.M.I. Amiibo once per day replenishes missiles
